Library Week!

I'm participating in the The Library Day in the Life Project this week, a semi-annual event coordinated by Bobbi Newman of Librarian by Day. Twice a year librarians, library staff and library students from all over the globe share a day (or week) in their life through blog posts, photos, video and Twitter updates.

A bit about my career (so far...):

  • I have a BA in English, History
  • I received my MLIS from the University of South Carolina in May 2010, where I also worked as a Reference Assistant at Thomas Cooper Library, and served as a Research Assistant to the Arnold School of  Public Health's Institute for Partnerships to Eliminate Health Disparities.
  • I was fortunate to receive a variety of scholarships to help me through graduate school, including the Cooper-Davis Fellowship, the Association of Research Libraries Career Enhancement Program Fellowship, and the Reach 21 Scholarship.
  • In 2010, after completing my MLIS, I began my professional career in a temporary position as an Information Research Specialist in the Graduate Recruit Program at the Library of Congress Congressional Research Service.
  • I continued my education with a Certificate of Advanced Study in Health Sciences Librarianship from the University of Pittsburgh, which I completed in May 2011.
  • I'm continuing my career at Howard University, where I began serving as the Allied Health Sciences Librarian at the Louis Stokes Health Sciences Library in January 2011.
  • I'm beginning another certificate program, in International Studies, at Howard University. I'm especially interested in how information policy and information management practices impact attempts to eliminate health disparities in developed and developing countries.
  • I'm considering a Ph.D. in Health Services Research and Policy, but not for another couple of years.
I'm a SC native, but have lived/worked in the DC area since May 2010. I'm 25 and librarianship was my first career choice. I'm so pleased with my decision :)

Stay tuned for details on the FABULOUS life of a medical librarian :)
