Sustainable Technology Design Practices Targeting Women in Latin American and Caribbean Countries: A Study in Belize

I have to start this post by saying how thankful I am that scholarships and fellowships exist in my field and that people think my work is interesting and want to fund it. I'm grateful and it's so fun to watch things come together and super gratifying to see hard work pay off. A couple of years ago, I was seriously considering a career change but I'm glad I stuck with Librarianship and I promise, promise to write and publish interesting papers.

My research interests started off really vague but in the past months have become more refined, mostly because of my experiences in learning opportunities from scholarships and fellowships. I'm going to Belize in a few weeks, thanks to a Graduate Travel scholarship. When I applied for the experience I was super excited but only had a rough idea of what I wanted to study--something that incorporated women and black people and technology and design and health. Then I was awarded an IFLA Fellowship, and surprise!, one of the other fellows is a Belizean librarian. So, I reached out to her for a better understanding of Belizean culture and for suggestions in my research and for my visit. She is super friendly, really helpful, and helped me get my thoughts together.

I think women, with technology, can have a powerful impact on social and economic development in their personal lives, for their families, and in their communities. I'm interested in designing sustainable technologies that help create health benefits for the poor, and also strengthen the ability of community-based enterprises to sustain their own development. I think technology can be empowering, especially for women, and I'm really interested in learning design strategies that will be most impactful and sustainable for developing countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. This is probably the beginning of something great, and potentially major. I'm so excited, guys!

Other Stuff:
1. New Life Goal: Endow a travel fellowship for minority graduate students at my Alma Mater, the University of South Carolina
2. NOLA was a blast--see video

I haven't been posting much and I can't promise I'll be much better in the coming months. But...

Hugs and kisses peeps,

Bethany
