I'm officially a certified swim instructor at the YMCA!
The Y has its own Swim Instructor Certification, which I passed. They taught me so much--well, not how to swim but how to perfect my techniques and instruct others. I already had my First Aid and CPR certifications from coaching for Girls on the Run, but I decided to also obtain a Lifeguard certification. Plus, I needed to hit the weights because I was, admittedly, kind of a weakling. I spelled out my whole long workout routine in a previous post and again here, and after six months of training I'm comfortable enough with lifting heavy things. I'll need that ability because I'm offering instruction in beginning, intermediate, and advanced swim techniques.
Swim classes are weekend mornings so they fit well into my schedule. That's important because I've been really busy with launching my IA freelance thing and coaching GOTR and planning BNHC events and working out and my full-time job and still trying to have a social life and doing daily chores. My success in getting it all done? Waking up really early and tracking everything with a daily calendar.
Instructor pay is decent and gets better once I become more experienced. Private lessons are also an option, better paid but I have to be likeable and again, establish a good reputation. I think I can manage that :)
My biggest concern is my hair! I have no idea how it will react to exposure to so much chlorine. Luckily, my girl Nap85 has a possible solution.
My first classes start in January! Exciting!
Hugs and kisses peeps,
Bethany
