Entrance Exams and Computer Programming

My intro to Computer Programming was during the first semester of my Junior year of high school. Computer Programming I, a 40-terminal computer lab that brimmed. We had an amazing teacher and all the stuff we needed to learn C++ basics. I loved it--it was redeeming.

Redeeming?

After struggling through Geometry as a Sophomore I was convinced Math and Logic were definitely not for me. It would annoy and confuse me when I consistently scored highest on the Math portions of standardized tests. With Programming I realized that I don't hate Math--that logical thinking was something I was actually good at. In Geometry, I was a victim of a teaching style that didn't resonate with me--it knocked my confidence. Programming gave it back.

I went on to Computer Programming II, with a much smaller cohort. Then CP III and finally, Computer Science AP/IB where we learned Javascript. That class consisted of a whopping 4 students, myself and three white guys.

Good times. I enjoyed it, but I decided to concentrate my college studies on the Humanities. In looking back on that decision, I think I made that choice for a couple of reasons: 1.) I loved History--especially Southern Studies and African American Culture. Those were programs my Alma Mater did really well. 2.) I had no appreciation of money--I was clueless as to the prices of cars and homes. I just knew I should stay out of student loan and credit card debt. I would probably do things a bit differently if I could--I wouldn't give up History, but I should have taken more tech courses as electives.

Anyway, my interests have brought CP back into  my life. But, like a a shifting foreign language, its changed and I haven't kept up.

 I'm rusty.

I jumped back in the game, thinking I'd be competitive and I will be--with a lot of practice. A whole lot of practice. I have to pass a coding exam in July or I'll be required to take a prereq Programming course this Fall. Maybe that won't be the worst thing, but I don't want to waste my time doing it. Hopefully, I'll have my stuff together by then

On a brighter note, I aced my Statistics courses and I think that intro exam will be a cake walk. Oh, yeah!

Wish me luck, peeps. I'll need it.

Hugs and kisses,

Bethany
