Cuba

The Opera House in Havana
Jay-Z and Bey's recent trip to Cuba gave grounds to a huge debate on how such prominent Americans could support a communist country. You'd think Cuba was the worst place one could ever think to set foot.

It's not.

It's stunningly beautiful, the people are nice, and the food is fantastic. How do I know? I've been there.

I spent a week in Cuba researching health information finding techniques back in 2011--I had to get approval from the U.S. State Dept., but it wasn't difficult.

Things there aren't all good, though. Its a Communist nation--food and housing are rationed, housing quality is poor for a lot of people, and it's a poor country overall.

But, I've noticed something about the poor in other countries that I do not see in the US. They're genuinely happy. I spend a lot of time working with kids in the US and I often find that they lose their spark--that "I can do anything" belief you want kids to have. Some of them can find it again with a bit of guidance, most can't. It's sad. Abroad, the poor seem motivated, ambitious, happy. That's interesting to me.

As for politics, I think both sides make convincing arguments, this Foreign Policy article is especially intriguing.

Should Cuba be opened to Americans? I say yes. In fact, once briefed on the risks, I should be allowed to travel wherever I like.

Hugs and kisses peeps,

Bethany
