Hi guys,
I've been MIA here, but working really hard at life. And, it's paying off! Huge news this week--I was the lead on an application for an NIH Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) Hackathon Award and it was funded! It's my first major award--pretty tiny by NIH standards, but huge for me. I did it! My team plans to have participants build an app that tracks and measures the potential for disease outbreaks, locally and internationally. I'm so pleased with myself and I'm working alongside a great team.
And, I won a scholarship to attend an international Women & Library Technology Conference– Empowering Women’s Participation in Open Technology & Culture at Northwestern University, just outside of Chicago. I'm excited for a discussion, with librarians from across the globe, on how women can lead in introducing information technologies that have the potential for positive behavior changes in their communities. My interests in international affairs, information exchange, health literacy, and information technology are coming together nicely. I can't wait to see where things go from here.
So much to think about--I have a week-long conference in Toronto in May, am studying in Belize in June and am attending a week-long teaching conference in Vermont in July. With lots of other stuff thrown in the mix. It looks like its going to be an epic summer.
In my personal life--I'm heading to Nola in a couple of weeks for a quick vacation and my mom is visiting me here in IN! Other than that, I'm laying low and trying to save money for Ghana in the Fall. As much as I love Chicago, driving there almost every weekend is a budget buster so I'm being more strategic about when I visit and am trying to get to know Lafayette better by making friends here. I have to admit it's pretty gorgeous in the Spring.
And, I figured out a plan for Cardio--Sprint, basically a really intense 30-minute cycling class--twice a week. I hate cycling, but it fits in my schedule and it gets me sweating so I can't complain too much. I was already going to the gym three times a week and I refused to add another day, so I do Sprint and BodyFlow back to back on the same day; BodyPump once a week; and another Sprint class later in the week. That seems to be working, for now.
Hugs and kisses peeps,
Bethany
