Fall/Winter Learning Goals

Fall and Winter are the two seasons when I have the time and motivation to learn new skills, mostly because I spend so much more time inside. This year, I streamlined learning goals for my free time:
  1. Improve my Spanish. As a 2016 IFLA Fellow, I’m receiving a mentor and support to expand my work to a global level. I joined the ALA International Relations Committee and the Americas Subcommittee where I plan to focus on research in Latin American and Caribbean countries. I’d like to up my novice Spanish skills to intermediate.
  2. Learn Descriptive Statistics basics. With an interest in data and information visualization, and to understand data generated from my research, an understanding of basic statistics--specifically descriptive statistics-- would be really helpful.
  3. Revisit Calculus. I haven’t taken a Calculus class since high school, and I’ve forgotten almost everything. I’ve recently realized that I need to understand Calculus better, if I want to take my programming skills to the next level.
I’m using Lynda and Khan Academy for the calculus and statistics courses, and my university’s Spanish Club Coffee Conversation to help with my language skills.

Am I the only one excited about nerding out as the weather gets cooler?

Hugs and kisses peeps,

Bethany
