Out with friends this weekend, I happened across the best slice of apple pie to ever enter my mouth. Never in the history of Bethany S. McGowan have I ever had a slice of apple pie this awesome. Epicness.
It was in a restaurant. Luna Grill and Diner to be exact. Nothing super special about the Dupont Circle spot except it was dirt cheap. I ordered a grilled salmon sandwich (with fries) that cost $10 and fresh squeezed lemonade for $2.50. The food was good, everything tasted fresh and homemade. Simple American fare done right and exactly what the menu promised. I was happy and had enough room in my budget for dessert.
It was the typical dessert menu...apple pie, brownie sundae, white chocolate raspberry cheesecake. I asked the waitress for her suggestion. She gave the apple pie a rave review. I didn't believe her--apple pie isn't typically something I order because, well, it usually isn't very good. I decided to try it anyway, taking her suggestion to upgrade to a la mode for an extra $1.25, the pie slice was $3.00.
Wish I'd taken a pic, but I devoured half of it before I thought about it. It was a great layout--a generous slice of pie, two scoops of vanilla ice cream on one pie side, and a dollop of whip cream and two sliced strawberries on the other. Two spoons too, so you could share. I did :)
It was so very good. Just thinking about it makes me want to leave work and grab a slice. The crust was light and flaky and buttery, the apples were the perfect texture--soft with a bit of crisp and juicy, the syrup was sweet and cinnamon-y...add the vanilla bean ice cream...yum. Oh. I was a very stuffed, very happy person leaving and I spent exactly $21, tip and tax included.
The menu options were great, and everyone's food looked good. Service was excellent. Shoot. I'm wondering why I would ever spend more eating out.
Check them out if you're in the DC area. Great spot if you or your friends are on a budget or just cheap :)
Hugs and kisses peeps!
Bethany
