I launched a small business a couple of months ago as a freelance information architect. I found a mentor and teamed up with him to complete a project--now I have his backing and the first item of my portfolio :)
It's slowly coming together. I want to complete a couple more projects before I launch out on my own. But, I've been thinking about branding myself--I need a business name, a logo, cards, possibly a website, an elevator speech, etc. I need to figure all that out.
And soon. I've been networking with basic business cards...not the best idea in a world of design. Lucky thing my cute face and charming demeanor have sort made of for that (tehehe, kidding). I just know my stuff.
I need to step up my game. I was hoping to just have a brilliant epiphany, but that hasn't happened so I think I'll be playing the brainstorming game.
And, of course, I've been researching. I found a couple of great articles, this one was especially helpful.
Building a business, even a tiny one, is work--hard, but fulfilling. I recently submitted my first personal grant application, I'd done quite a few as a part of my full-time job but never one specifically for me. That was so exciting. I find out the results in March. If I get funding, I'd like to take a few specialized IA classes at Catholic University and add some software packages to my collection and create more of an actual 'office' space in my apartment.
Logos and colors and fonts and sites and cards. So many options and price points. Lots to think about and I need to get it all right the first time around for the sake of consistency and recognizability. *sigh*
I think I need to chat with more people who've done this before :)
If this is a success, I can work from anywhere. omg #motivation
Hugs and kisses peeps,
Bethany
