My 10-Minute Definition of A Leader

I was recently given 10 minutes to define what leadership meant to me. Here's what I came up with--edited for grammatical errors. I think I nailed it--at least its what I strive to be :)

"A leader is a person who combines natural talent with learned information and skills, and uses that combination to impact the people around her. Leadership can be as localized as to be family-oriented, or as wide-ranging as to have international impact. A leader is personified by not only exemplifying self-excellence, but also expecting and encouraging excellence from those who surround her. She doesn’t expect perfection and is willing to patiently work through mistakes. Leadership is hard work, and a good leader finds a balance between work and play. She knows her limits and won’t work beyond them, and when appropriate she knows how to have a good time. A leader is aware of the strengths and limitations of her team, and delegates responsibilities accordingly. She might push you past your comfort level, but only to a point that encourages growth. She can either provide guidance or connect you with an expert who can. Leaders are curious and aware of changing environments, especially when it impacts their work. They are adaptive and flexible, introspective and retrospective. A leader commands respect—whether she is working for someone, alongside someone, or for herself."
